Aaron Boone Sits Anthony Volpe in Opener vs. Mariners, But Still ‘Confident’
Boone Remains Confident in Volpe
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone benched 21-year-old shortstop Anthony Volpe for the team’s season opener against the Seattle Mariners, opting for veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa instead. Despite the decision, Boone expressed confidence in Volpe’s abilities.
“I’m still confident in Volpe,” Boone said. “He’s performed well this spring, and he’s got a bright future ahead of him. But I think Isiah gives us the best chance to win today.”
Volpe Impresses in Spring Training
Volpe had a strong spring training, batting .308 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 24 games. He also showed off his defensive skills, making several impressive plays at shortstop.
However, Kiner-Falefa has more experience in the majors, and Boone believes he is the better option for the team right now.
“Isiah is a veteran player who knows how to handle the pressure of playing in the big leagues,” Boone said. “He’s also a good defender and a solid hitter.”
Boone Confident in Volpe’s Future
Despite the decision to sit Volpe in the opener, Boone is confident that the young shortstop has a bright future with the Yankees.
“Volpe is a special player,” Boone said. “He’s got all the tools to be a star in this league. I’m excited to see what he can do this season.”
The Yankees will open their season against the Mariners on Friday, March 30, at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
